Nurse Practitioners

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are trained specialists nurses. They have undertaken additional medical education to diagnose and treat both acute illness and chronic conditions and can prescribe medication. Our NP is an experienced nurse who, through further education and specialist training, has developed her skills and knowledge to offer extended services to patients. While not being a replacement for doctors, she can provide some aspects of care previously provided by the Doctors. Our NP can diagnose, treat, prescribe medication, and, if necessary, refer patients to the hospital. If they feel you need to see a GP, they can arrange this for you. the NP can also see patients either in the Surgery or at home visits. Patients asking for “same day” appointments are likely to see the Nurse Practitioner which frees up the GPs to see patients with chronic or complex conditions. Patients being seen in A&E or at NHS24 usually see Nurse Practitioners and the Surgery has adopted this same structure.

Nurses

Practice Nurses are qualified and registered nurses. They can help with health issues such as family planning, healthy living advice, blood pressure checks and dressings. The Practice Nurse runs clinics for long-term health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, etc and also has appointments for cervical smears.

Healthcare Assistants

Healthcare assistants support practice nurses with their daily work and carry out tasks such as phlebotomy (drawing blood), blood pressure measurement and new patient checks. They may act as a chaperone when a patient or doctor requests one.

Practice Management

The Practice Manager is involved in managing all of the business aspects of the Practice such as making sure that the right systems are in place to provide a high quality of patient care, human resources, finance, patient safety, premises and equipment and information technology. The Practice Manager supports the GPs and other medical professionals with delivering patient services and also helps to develop extended services to enhance patient care.

Administration

Administrators provide an important link for patients with the Surgery and are your initial contact point for general enquiries. They can provide basic information on services and results and direct you to the right person depending on your health issue or query. Receptionists make most of the patient appointments with the GPs and nurses. They also perform other important tasks such as issuing repeat prescriptions, dealing with prescription enquiries, dealing with patient records and carrying out searches and practice audits.
